The guide at the historic country estate the Tempel takes you on a journey back in time through the gardens, along the tree-lined avenues and across the monumental bridges. You will learn about the history of the estate as well as about the nature that can be found here today. This hidden pearl can be found on the northern edge of Rotterdam, near Overschie.

Guided tour of the Tempel country estate

A volunteer guide will take you on a walk of more than an hour over the country estate and will treat you to coffee or tea with cake afterwards. During the walk you will pass through gardens in different historic styles and through the surrounding woodlands. Natuurmonumenten started managing the estate in 2021 and is restoring the winding paths in the landscape garden and opening up the views that are so characteristic of the Baroque period.

What can you expect at the estate?

In all seasons, this undiscovered gem in Rotterdam Overschie is worth a visit due to the diversity of plant and animal life that is present. For example, there is the oldest oak in Rotterdam, the kingfisher – in addition to forty other bird species – can be seen and even the protected common noctule bat nests here!

National monuments

However, did you also know that there are currently 16 national monuments to be found on the estate? All are owned by the municipality of Rotterdam. The guide will show you the main building, the coach house and the Chinese tea house but, unfortunately, access to the buildings is not possible.  The walk also takes you over a number of old bridges, around the ornamental ponds and past the sculpture collection.
